The Necessity and
Purpose of Baptism
Romans 6:1-4
INTRODUCTION: Many of you will not learn anything “new”
from this lesson. Hopefully, it will serve to “stir up
our minds by way of remembrance” (2 Peter 2:1). It is
important that we are clear in our own minds of the
doctrine that we have “obeyed from the heart” (Romans
6:17).
I. Salvation Without Baptism Is Salvation Apart From The
Death Of Jesus (See Romans 6:1-4).
II. Salvation Without Baptism Is Salvation Out Of Christ
(See Galatians 3:27; Romans 8:1).
III. Salvation Without Baptism Is Salvation Outside
Christ’s Body (See 1 Corinthians 12:13; Ephesians 5:23).
IV. Salvation Without Baptism Is Salvation Without
Christ’s Blood (See Matthew 26:28; Acts 2:38).
V. Salvation Without Baptism Is Salvation Without
“Calling On The Name Of The Lord” (See Romans 10:13;
Acts 2:21; Acts 22:16).
VI. Salvation Without Baptism Is Salvation Without
Becoming A “New Creature” (2 Corinthians 5:17), And
Without Walking In “Newness Of Life” (Romans 6:4).
VII. Consider What Baptism Is “Joined With” In The New
Testament:
A. Baptism is “joined with” FAITH – Mark 16:16.
B. Baptism is “joined with” REPENTANCE – Acts 2:38.
C. Baptism is “joined with” CONFESSION – Acts 8:36-38.
D. Baptism is “joined with” SALVATION – 1 Peter 3:21.
E. Notice the order: FAITH, REPENTANCE and CONFESSION
all come BEFORE baptism; SALVATION, REMISSION OF SINS,
and REJOICING all FOLLOW baptism.
CONCLUSION: If we trust God’s Word to teach us what we
need to know in order to be saved (2 Peter 1:3), then
let us obey that Word, let us rejoice in that Word, and
let us proclaim that Word – JUST AS IT IS!
